What is Polycystic Ovarian Sydnrome?

PCOS causes the ovaries to produce higher than normal amounts of androgens (male hormones). This interferes with egg production. The eggs that the ovaries normally produce develop into cysts, little sacs filled with liquid. Instead of being released during ovulation,

as an egg would be released, the cysts build up in the ovaries and can become enlarged. Therefore, making it challenging for a woman with PCOS to get pregnant.

What causes PCOS?

The root of the problem is resistance to the hormone insulin. That means you need more insulin than usual to regulate the levels of sugar in the body. The extra insulin causes an imbalance in the hormones that usually make your menstrual cycle run smoothly.

What are the odds of having PCOS?

It affects 6-10% of women but usually do not appear till 20s or 30s.
